The summer of base ball has begun in earnest around these parts.

That’s “base ball,” not baseball, mind you, which is how nineteenth century Americans referred to what was then a new game.

The Mansfield Independents Base Ball Club is playing again this summer, both in the friendly confines of the Ohio State Reformatory grounds as well as on the road.

The squad have several games under their belts, but many remain:

  • Sunday June 27 @ Dover Cy Young Festival 3 Games times TBA
  • Sunday July11 @ Mansfield Reformatory 2:00 PM vs Whiskey Island 2 Games
  • Sunday July 18 @ Mansfield Reformatory 2:00 PM vs The Ghostriders 2 games
  • Sunday August 8 @ Mansfield Reformatory 2:00 PM vs Smithville
  • Sunday August 29 @ Upper Sandusky vs The Ghostriders 1:30 PM
    2 games
  • Saturday October 2 @ Cleveland vs Whiskey Island 12:00 PM 2 games
  • Saturday October 9 @ Delaware vs Pluggy’s Town BBC 12:00 PM 2 games Scioto Township Park

The Club is modeled after the original Mansfield Independents Base Ball Club, which played in the first professional baseball game in history which took place in Mansfield on June 1, 1869 (read more about that game here). Mansfield lost that contest to the Cincinnati Red Stockings by a score of 48 to 14.

The Independents are also making a repeat appearance on Sunday, September 5 at the Ohio Cup at Ohio Village in Columbus. Three games will be played that day; we will have more infromation on that festival as the date nears.
