At its meeting on Tuesday, February 5, Mansfield City Council will be taking an initial look at a proposed ordinance which would authorize acceptance of a grant for the purchase of data analysis software designed to assist the Mansfield Police Department in its efforts to create safe neighborhoods within the city.

The grant in the amount of $59,844 would come from Kent State University, a research partner in the Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium. This would be a one-time grant with no local match.

The Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium (NOVCC) was established through the United States Attorney’s office of the Northern District of Ohio in 2007. The collaboration includes the largest eight cities in the district to include: Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Elyria, Lorain, Mansfield, Toledo and Youngstown. This project has fostered a greater level of cooperation between law enforcement at the local, state and federal levels and has resulted in significant training opportunities as well as an increased analytic capacity through the Intelligence-Led Policing philosophy.

In other business, Council is set to look at the proposed “Mansfield Rising” Plan developed through a consortium of local input, funding by the Richland County Foundation, and the involvement of statewide urban think tank Greater Ohio, Inc.. It also will be considering several property demolitions and a series of property measures related to the large, much discussed scale storm water/flooding mitigation project.
