It wasn’t the glazed yeast doughnuts that brought grandparents from near and far to Woodland Elementary School Wednesday morning. Nor was it the orange juice, milk and coffee.

Woodland’s grandparents breakfast gave the older generation an opportunity to share school time with their little ones in kindergarten through third grade. “It was nice to see the support of so many grandparents,” said Principal Kim Johnson. “And it was nice for them to see where the kids learn every day, visit the classrooms and meet our teachers.”

While most grandparents are local, Johnson said she learned that one set of grandparents traveled from Pennsylvania and others drove nearly two hours for the 8:40 a.m. breakfast. The Woodland PTO purchased the doughnuts and drinks and PTO members were on the serving line. “We used to do this at lunch time. The grandparents would come in at different times to have lunch with their grandchildren,” said PTO President Angela Perry. “This year we had registrations from more than 200 grandparents and students. We didn’t expect that many so we decided to have a breakfast in the gym.”

Perry too heard that some visitors traveled from afar. “I know we had some who drove down from the Lake (Erie) area,” she said.

PTO members set up the tables and prepared the gym after school Tuesday, assisted by teachers, Johnson and the custodian. “It was a great turnout. We’re glad so many could come,” Perry said.
