As winter loosens its grip on north central Ohio, Mohican State Park is stepping into spring with a focused lineup of early April naturalist programs. The offerings are simple, accessible, and rooted in what the park does best: helping visitors experience the outdoors directly.

Released by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the schedule spans birding, hiking, hands-on learning, and informal engagement with park staff.

Wednesday, April 1 — Birds And Wildlife Up Close

The month begins with two programs centered on observation and interaction. From 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, visitors can join a guided birding session at the Visitor Center. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and take part in a relaxed introduction to spring bird activity. The program is weather dependent.

Later, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the focus shifts indoors at the Nature Center with critter feeding. Visitors can assist the naturalist in feeding Mohican’s animal ambassadors, offering a closer look at species that call the park home.

Friday, April 3 — A Chance To Ask And Learn

For those seeking a more informal experience, the naturalist will be available at the Nature Center from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This open-format session allows visitors to stop in, ask questions, and learn more about the park’s wildlife, trails, and seasonal changes.

Saturday, April 4 — Trails, Skills, And Creativity

Saturday brings the most varied lineup, starting with a guided hike. From 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the Woof Walk invites visitors and their dogs to join a naturalist-led hike from the Visitor Center parking lot to the park’s swinging bridge and back. The roughly three-mile route is considered an easy hike. Pets must be on a leash, and the program is weather dependent.

In the afternoon, programming turns to skill-building. From 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, an archery session will be held near the campground entrance along State Route 3. Open to beginners and experienced participants alike, the program requires advance registration at least 48 hours prior. Registration is completed by calling the naturalist at (419) 265-5848 and leaving a voicemail. Confirmation is required for participation.

The day concludes with a creative activity. From 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the imprint craft program at the Visitor Center allows participants to create decorative impressions using natural materials found in the park.

A Flexible, Weather-Responsive Approach

Nature Center hours vary throughout the month, and many programs depend on weather conditions. The naturalist may be available at different times during the day, and visitors are encouraged to call ahead for details.

This flexibility reflects the realities of early spring in Ohio, where changing conditions shape both the landscape and the visitor experience.

A Simple Invitation To Step Outside

The April schedule at Mohican State Park is not built around large events or complicated logistics. Instead, it offers a series of approachable entry points into the outdoors. Whether it is a quiet hour of birding at 10:00 AM, a mid-afternoon wildlife encounter at 2:00 PM, or a Saturday hike along familiar trails, the emphasis remains on participation and presence. For those ready to welcome the season, Mohican provides the setting and the invitation.
