Area residents are encouraged to prolong Christmas by participating in great music performed in a unique setting.

On Wednesday night, December 27, Mid Ohio Civic Opera will be hosting a “Sing-Along” of Handel’s oratorio, Messiah, at First United Methodist Church in downtown Mansfield.

Enjoy professional soloists and then sing long with the famous choruses including, of course, the famous Hallelujah Chorus. Or, if you would prefer, you can sit and listen without singing.

George Frideric Handel composed Messiah, an English-language oratorio, in 1741. The text was compiled from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. It traces the story of Jesus Christ, with the first part prophesying the birth of Christ, the second exalting his sacrifice for humankind, and the final section heralding his resurrection.

Handel completed the 260-page oratorio in just 24 days, working tirelessly and with great emotional intensity. The oratorio was first performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742, and received its London premiere nearly a year later. Initially, it had a modest public reception but eventually gained in popularity, becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works worldwide.

No tickets are required and no admission will be charged, although donations will be accepted. Bring your own score or a limited number of scores will be available to borrow.

The event will begin at 7 PM.
