Mansfield City Council has big decisions to make at its upcoming meeting this evening, as it considers acceptance of grants totaling $1 million from the Richland County Foundation. These grants aim to bolster community projects, enhancing safety, infrastructure, and accessibility.
Grant for the B&O Connector Trail Safety Tunnel – $200,000
Project Overview
The first grant up for consideration is $200,000 allocated for the construction of the B&O Connector Trail Safety Tunnel.
Payment Structure
This grant is to be paid out over two years, with the first installment of $100,000 in 2024, followed by a second payment in 2025.
Purpose
The funding will be specifically used to build a tunnel that connects the walking path along Trimble Road to the B&O Trail near Marion Avenue. The project’s emphasis is on creating a longer trail while improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing Trimble Avenue via the new tunnel.

Grant for Sterkel Park Improvements – $500,000
Project Overview
The largest grant being considered is $500,000 for improvements at Sterkel Park, earmarked for the Building Community Park for All project.

This funding aims to create an accessible park that allows individuals with disabilities to interact with their peers. The inclusive environment will foster community integration, allowing residents of all abilities to enjoy outdoor recreational activities together.
