As summer takes center stage, the Richland County Park District (RCPD) is excited to announce that the newly established Fleming Falls Preserve is officially opening its gates for public access every weekend. The Preserve promises a serene environment that encourages both exploration and relaxation, perfect for weekend escapades away from city noise.

Limited Access for Quality Preservation

The Fleming Falls Preserve is only open to the public on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from dawn to dusk throughout 2023. This decision ensures that the Preserve’s natural beauty remains intact while the park district gradually ramps up to full operations. RCPD is set to broaden its access to a seven-day schedule as soon as new funding becomes available in 2024 and logistics permit.

Finding Fleming Falls Preserve

Although the Preserve does not yet have an official address, it can still be located using the old Camp Mowana address: 2276 Fleming Falls Road, Mansfield. Google map users can find the new parking area to the east of this address. Note that 2294 Fleming Falls Road will direct you to the new parking area. However, a Google search will show a now-demolished old house. Remember, this address has no current association with any Google search for Camp Mowana or Fleming Falls Preserve.

Preserve Policies and Facilities

The RCPD wants to remind visitors of the following guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment:

  • The Preserve is open from dawn to dusk. Any cars left in the parking lot after dark may be locked in or towed at the owner’s expense.
  • Public parking is available just past the old entrance. Avoid the closed and chained silver gate.
  • Limited restroom facilities are available with a portable toilet located in the parking lot.
  • The Preserve currently does not offer trash removal, so visitors are kindly asked to pack out what they pack in.
  • For safety, stay on the marked trails. Trail maps are available for navigation.
  • An observation platform provides a safe viewing area for the main Fleming Falls waterfall. Avoid attempting to use old trails or walk down into the ravine.
  • Picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations currently available.
  • Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and under control at all times. Dog waste must be picked up and removed from the property.

Anticipating a Bright Future

The RCPD appreciates everyone’s support and patience as it works to fully open Fleming Falls Preserve in the near future. The successful passage of the RCPD Park District Levy signals a promising future for the park district, so stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, the RCPD hopes visitors will enjoy the serene surroundings and responsible exploration the Preserve offers on weekends.
