The Mid Ohio Civic Opera (MOCA) is taking a bold step to democratize access to high-quality, professional opera performances. Their mission is simple yet ambitious: to bring “big city” singing to small regional towns in Ohio, completely free of charge. And their choice of performance? None other than Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio,” a piece that weaves a tale of love, sacrifice, and freedom.

Starting June 23, MOCA embarks on a regional tour by turning various churches into grand opera houses. They kick off their journey at Grace Episcopal Church in Mansfield, with a 7 PM performance that is expected to resonate through the hallowed halls. The following performances are scheduled for June 25 at Zion Lutheran Church in Wooster at 3 PM, June 30 at Trinity Lutheran in Ashland at 7 PM, and July 2 at Epworth United Methodist in Marion at 3 PM. No tickets are needed. In fact, the only requirement is a love for music and a willingness to be swept away by the powerful performances.

“Fidelio” is not a choice made lightly. Beethoven’s sole foray into the world of opera, this masterpiece is considered one of the greatest works of music ever written. The opera will be sung in its original German, in concert style, with projected translations for the audience. This approach not only maintains the authenticity of the opera but also ensures that the powerful story and the emotions it evokes are accessible to all. Moreover, it’s a family-friendly event, making it a perfect outing for music lovers of all ages.

“Fidelio” is a captivating tale of a brave woman named Leonore who disguises herself as a prison guard named “Fidelio” to rescue her husband Florestan, who is unjustly imprisoned. Its themes of love, courage, and justice are universally appealing, and its music is quintessential Beethoven—full of emotion and exquisite beauty. The opera’s famous “Prisoners’ Chorus” is a particular highlight, with its moving portrayal of the prisoners’ joy as they are briefly released into the open air.

By choosing “Fidelio,” MOCA is not just providing an opportunity to experience a world-class opera performance, but also fostering a deeper appreciation for Beethoven’s genius. This regional tour promises a cultural experience of a lifetime, bringing a taste of the big city to the heart of small-town Ohio.
