It’s opening weekend for a local cinematic landmark.

The Springmill Drive-In Theatre has been a beacon of entertainment and cherished memories since it first opened its doors on June 17, 1950.

With its bright, clear digital projection and nostalgic atmosphere, the drive-in continues to thrive as a hub for movie enthusiasts and families seeking a unique movie-going experience.

The theatre has a rich history, having been built and opened by Charles M. and William Mosser, who operated under the name Fremont Drive-In Theatres. The theatre initially had a capacity for 620 cars and premiered with the feature film “The Gal Who Took the West.” Accompanying this main attraction were the short film “The Uninvited Bride” and the cartoon “Kangaroo Kid.”

Over the years, the drive-in underwent a series of ownership changes. In 1971, after Mosser’s passing, his daughter Janet Sweeney took control of the company. The theatre later became part of the Jack Armstrong Circuit and Robert Tilton Associates before being taken over by Great Eastern Theatre Co. in 1982.

In 2008, the Springmill Drive-In Theatre expanded its offerings by adding a second screen to the parking field, accommodating an additional 150 cars. This expansion allowed the drive-in to showcase even more first-run double features and occasionally triple features at no extra charge.

Open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Springmill Drive-In Theatre invites moviegoers to experience films under the stars in a setting that harkens back to a simpler time. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy a meal at the concession stand before settling in for an evening of cinematic magic.

As a reminder, the theatre broadcasts movie audio over FM stereo radio, so bringing a working radio is essential. Additionally, if you plan to bring outside food, please review the drive-in’s outside food permit policy.

Opening Weekend is here, with the following movies on offer: “The Super Mario Bros Movie,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” and “Scream VI.” More information on the Springmill Drive-In Theatre can be found on its website (click below).
