There’s been more than a few changes between June 28, 1872 and May 21, 2022, dates that saw or will see Mansfielders graduate from high school.

In the 1870 census, two years before the first of those dates, Mansfield’s population was recorded at 8,029, itself a rather hefty 75.3% increase from the number ten years before. In September, three months after the graduation ceremony, Mansfield hosted the Ohio State Fair – the first of two consecutive years the Fair was held here.

The ten graduates of Mansfield High School graduated in style in June 1872. Then, like now, music was a large part of the ceremony, with choruses, solos, and a duet singing “In The Starlight” entertaining those in the packed Miller’s Hall. It was said that hundreds were standing outside, unable to enter.

The 1882 Atlas of Mansfield shows that Miller’s Hall was in a brick building located on the northeast corner of West Third and Main Street, the current site of the Crowes Shoes Building.

Fast forward 150 years. This Saturday, May 21, will see the commencement service for Mansfield Senior High School in the Pete Henry Gymnasium. The ceremony gets underway early, at 10 AM.

Speeches will be shared by Class President Naddelynne Ferguson, who will welcome the graduating class (and up to 12 ticket holders/ guests accompanying each); Salutorian Alexia Gerber; and Valedictorian Carman Taylor.

The Mansfield Senior High Band will play, with the Senior High Choir performing “Eye of the Tiger” by Surviror, and “This is Me” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

1812Blockhouse congratulates the members of the Mansfield Senior High School Class of 2022! May you go far, achieve much, and always remember that north central Ohio is your home.
