In 1888, Mansfield’s largest employer was not a brass, appliance or tire company. It was Hautzenroeder & Company, a cigar manufacturer with 285 employees. 🏈 Madison, Clear Fork and Shelby earn Friday victories
Published Saturday: Madison overwhelmed Norwalk 42-7, while Clear Fork held Lexington to 134 yards of offense in a 17-7 victory. Shelby remained unbeaten by defeating longtime rival Bellevue 27-7.

🏭 Industrial museum honors six local legacies
Published Saturday: The North Central Ohio Industrial Museum has inducted six new entries into its Champions of Industry Hall of Fame. The honorees represent local achievements in organized labor, agricultural machinery, pumps, oil production, invention and metal manufacturing.
The group includes Daniel McFarland Cook, described by the museum as Mansfield’s first inventor, and Glenn Taylor of Taylor-Dise Manufacturing and Taylor Metal Products. 🏘️ Shelby reviews downtown and housing projects
Friday carryover: Four Main Street property owners have applied for Shelby’s 2026 facade grants, which can cover 50% of eligible project costs. Applications are scheduled for review Tuesday.
Officials also discussed plans for an Italian restaurant and boutique hotel inside the former First National Bank building, six new Welcome Home Ohio houses and expansions at Buckeye Superstore and Millstone Communities. Read the Shelby News Reporter update.
⛏️ Gold Rush Days returns to the Clear Fork River
Weekend event: The Buckeye Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America is celebrating its 30th anniversary with Gold Rush Days on Saturday and Sunday at 1099 Cutnaw Road near Bellville.
Activities begin at 10:00 AM both days and include public digs, gold-panning instruction, demonstrations, competitions, duck races, vendors and food trucks. Admission and parking are free, and proceeds from selected activities support community organizations. See the Gold Rush Days information.
🏎️ Endurance racing takes over Mid-Ohio
Weekend event: Sixty cars are entered in the Fast Parts Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Saturday’s eight-hour endurance race runs from 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM. Sunday’s seven-hour race begins at 8:15 AM and concludes at 3:15 PM. Live video, timing and race-control updates are available through the event’s online race center. Follow the ChampCar weekend.
📚🎶🚘 Books, music and chrome round out the weekend
Ohio author Mindy McGinnis will discuss and sign her novel Under This Red Rock from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Saturday at the Ontario Branch Library. The program explores the author’s research, mental-health themes and experience writing about rural Ohio. See the library event.
