🚰 State grant could help replace 90-year-old water line
Mansfield will seek a $500,000 Ohio Public Works Commission grant toward a $1.4 million water-system project. The proposed work would replace 6,100 feet of aging cast-iron pipe connecting the Trisch and Wiles wells with the city’s water-treatment plant.
The new line is intended to improve reliability and prevent water from escaping through deteriorated sections of pipe. If funding is approved, construction is expected to begin after July 2027 and finish by March 2028. Read the Richland Source report
🚔 Mansfield officer placed on leave after OVI arrest
A Mansfield police officer has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly reporting for duty under the influence Saturday afternoon. Police said John Meyer was relieved of duty and taken for drug and alcohol testing.
Ontario police stopped Meyer later that evening and arrested him on charges that include operating a vehicle while impaired, an open container violation and lane-related offenses. The administrative investigation and criminal case remain pending. Read the Thursday report from WHIO
🌪️ Federal storm-aid request includes Richland County
Wednesday evening carryover: Gov. Mike DeWine has requested a presidential major-disaster declaration covering Richland, Shelby and 21 other Ohio counties affected by severe weather between Aug. 10 and Aug. 23.
The storms produced flooding, destructive winds and 17 confirmed tornadoes. Preliminary assessments found at least 50 homes and businesses destroyed across the affected counties. Federal approval could unlock recovery grants, low-interest loans and hazard-mitigation assistance. Read the regional report

Clear Fork and Lexington played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday in girls soccer. Both teams are adjusting their lineups after early-season injuries to important contributors.

🚧 Road resurfacing continues today
Monday notice, happening today: Richland County’s chip-and-seal program is scheduled to continue on Myers and Springmill West roads. Springmill West work is expected to continue Friday, followed by Horning Road.

⛏️ Gold Rush Days returns near Bellville
Gold Rush Days will mark the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America’s 30th year with activities Saturday and Sunday at the Swank Claim, 1099 Cutnaw Road.
Visitors can try panning for Ohio gold while watching demonstrations and competitions. Food trucks, vendors, children’s activities, duck races and a cornhole tournament are also planned, with proceeds supporting local charities and Scouts. Read the Richland Source preview
