Mansfield was founded in 1808 on a ridge between two forks of the Mohican River. Unlike many early settlements built directly beside a river, the community relied on a large natural spring near today’s Central Park. 🎺 Labor Day parade steps off downtown
Mansfield’s Labor Day Parade begins at 10:00 AM at the Five-Way Light, where Park Avenue West meets Marion Avenue. The procession will travel downtown toward Richland Carrousel Park.

🤿 Sheriff’s dive team trains for difficult missions
Published Monday: The Richland County Sheriff’s Office operates the county’s only remaining dive team. More than six members train monthly at locations including Pleasant Hill and Charles Mill lakes, retreating to the Friendly House pool for winter exercises.
The team recovers vehicles, weapons and other evidence while also handling rescue and body-recovery missions. Divers frequently work in water with little or no visibility, relying on tether lines and signals from teammates above the surface. Read the Richland Source feature.
🇺🇸 Bellville nonprofit expands support for veterans
Sunday carryover: Love Our Hero’s has grown from a small thrift store into a 9,000-square-foot Bellville resource serving veterans across 18 counties.
The organization helps with utility bills, household furnishings, vehicle repairs and medical equipment. Figures displayed inside the store show that it has assisted 483 veterans and provided more than $218,000 in support. Read the community profile.
🌳 Heritage tree takes root at Liberty Park
Weekend carryover: A swamp white oak was planted Friday at Liberty Park as Richland County’s contribution to the America 250-Ohio Heritage Trees program.
The statewide initiative is placing a native white oak in each of Ohio’s 88 counties. Mansfield’s tree is accompanied by a plaque bearing a quotation from President James A. Garfield: “The oak’s strength is in its roots, as is ours.” See WMFD’s planting announcement or read the WQIO background.
🚒 Shelby considers federal firefighter grant
Friday preview for Tuesday: Shelby City Council will consider authorizing an application for a federal SAFER grant to hire career firefighters.
The council agenda also includes Richland County’s updated five-year solid-waste plan, an appropriations amendment and a second reading of proposed changes to septage receiving rates. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM Tuesday at 29 Mack Avenue. Read the Shelby News Reporter preview.
🚧 U.S. 42 closure begins Wednesday
Earlier ODOT notice: U.S. 42 will close Wednesday between Cedarwood Drive and Gables Boulevard for a culvert replacement.
The posted detour follows U.S. 42 north to State Route 314, then State Route 97 west before returning to U.S. 42. The project is expected to continue through Friday, October 2. See ODOT’s Richland County traffic advisories.
