NOTE: Updated on Thursday afternoon

The Responsible Restart Ohio plan to reopen business and society has, as we all know, taken a sector by sector approach. One of the latest areas of the economy allowed to reopen has been in indoor entertainment venues, including the state’s outstanding collection of historic venues and museums.

Along with movie theatres, art galleries, and zoos, Ohio’s museums were allowed to open their doors again on Wednesday. Each must abide by the standard set of heath guidelines, including restrictions on social distancing and gathering size.

At least two local historic attractions have set plans to do just that.

The Ohio State Reformatory opened on Wednesday, resuming normal 10 AM to 4 PM tour hours. Currently only self-guided tours are available on the Reformatory’s online purchase website, which can be accessed here.

Kingwood Center Gardens has been open for some time in terms of the public gardens. Now, however, inside venues will be included. On Wednesday, June 17, Kingwood Hall and the Courtyard Complex buildings will be opened, although the display greenhouses will remain closed because of the narrow walkways.

As stated by Kingwood Center, “To make your visit a safer one, hand sanitizing stations have been added, cleaning procedures updated, capacity limits monitored, face coverings worn by staff, and distancing reminders posted.”

The venerable Oak Hill Cottage has announced plans to reopen effective July 12. In an announcement posted on social media, representatives shared, “Tours will be on a schedule, either through the website appointment calendar, or Sunday drop-in 2-4pm by chance to get an open slot; 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30, or 4pm. Use our website appointment calendar to claim a Sunday time slot or request a small group tour during the week. Tours are docent-led using wireless tour guide equipment. We provide new earbud sets and sanitized receivers for each guest, which allows greater distancing and hearing assistance. Masks are required, and we will provide them at cost if necessary. No self-guided tours are offered. Six people total, and no more than two socially-distanced groups per tour will be adhered to.”

Venues in surrounding areas are also re-launching activities. The Gill House in Galion, part of Haunted Mansfield, is hosting its first paranormal hunts this weekend since earlier this year.
