Gorman Nature Center is inviting volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help protect local natural spaces during an invasive species removal event on Wednesday, May 27, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The drop-in volunteer opportunity is part of the Earth Stewardship Celebration and is designed for anyone ready to spend a morning outdoors helping improve habitat, trails, and woodland health. A rain check date has been set for Friday, May 29.

Why Invasive Species Matter

Invasive plants can spread quickly, crowding out native species that support birds, pollinators, wildlife, and the overall balance of a natural area. Removing them is often labor-intensive work, but it is also one of the most direct ways volunteers can make a visible difference. At Gorman Nature Center, that work becomes part of a larger stewardship effort: keeping trails welcoming, protecting native plants, and helping the landscape remain healthy for future visitors.

What Volunteers Should Bring

Participants are asked to wear sturdy work clothing and hiking shoes suitable for outdoor conditions. The nature center will provide work gloves, tools, water, and snacks, making it easy for volunteers to arrive ready to help without needing specialized equipment.

The event is structured as a drop-in opportunity, so volunteers may come during the morning window and lend a hand as their schedule allows.

A Thank You For Helping Out

All participants will be entered into a drawing for one of three $100 gift card certificates to local businesses. The event takes place at Gorman Nature Center. Volunteers do not need prior experience, just a willingness to work outdoors and contribute to the care of one of the area’s valued natural spaces.
