The questions were plentiful, and so were answers, as several dozen attendees gathered to learn more about the ongoing Main Street project in downtown Mansfield on Thursday evening.

Hosted by Downtown Mansfield Inc. at its Social on Main facility in the heart of the project area, the open house was designed to serve several purposes at once: to provide an update on the project’s current status, to invite public comment, to share visuals of what’s ahead, and to make contractors, government officials, and others directly involved available as information resources.

The walls were lined with display boards outlining the project’s background, progress, and remaining work. Features of the project which were highlighted included the following statements:

  • The project includes brand new underground infrastructure has been designed and built to last another 100 years
  • Two-way traffic is being initiated to make downtown easier to navigate, better for business, and more intuitive for visitors
  • New sidewalks and curbs are being constructed throughout the corridor ones which are ADA accessible and built to last
  • New crosswalks pedestrian signals curved bump outs and other traffic calming features will provide a safer and more enjoyable pedestrian experience
  • Architectural features like sandstone pillars and lighted arches will celebrate Mansfield heritage
  • A beautiful, walkable Main Street is an economic engine, and across the country downtown streetscape investment leads to increases of foot traffic sales and new businesses
  • Main Street is Mansfield’s front door to visitors. A more beautiful accessible and lively Main Street makes a great first impression encouraging visitors to come back and to bring their friends, generating new Revenue

For more about the project, our coverage from back in April 2025 as work was set to begin can be accessed here:

It wasn’t just photographs and maps on offer. Immediately to the left upon entering, attendees could see examples of actual street fixtures that will become part of Main Street. At one point, we sat with two attendees on a sample black bench. The consensus was clear: it was a remarkably comfortable metal bench with a back, though one person joked that its black finish might make it a bit hot in the summer. Nearby, a sample of the soon-to-be-installed waste receptacles was also on display.

Up next in the $20 million project is a phase that includes improvements to drainage systems, installation of signal foundations, construction of a brick-and-concrete intersection at Main Street and Park Avenue, new sidewalk construction, and brick crosswalks just north of North Park Street and on Park Avenue between Main and Diamond streets.

Officials have also announced a pair of upcoming street closures.

Park Ave. from Diamond to Main: starting 3/30 for approximately 45 days

Main St. from 3rd to Park: starting 3/23 for approximately 45 days

Those who attended included Mayor Jodie Perry, City Engineer Bob Bianchi, and Councilman Aurelio Diaz from the City of Mansfield; the leadership team from Downtown Mansfield, Inc., representatives from the Richland County Foundation and Richland Chamber & Economic Development; downtown building and business owners; and a number of local residents and visitors interested in the future of downtown.

We also ran into Hannah Martin from Richland Source, who was covering the event. Her story can be found here. We had a nice conversation and compared “notes” about the world of local media in Mansfield and Richland County in 2026, as well as in Delaware County.

According to the city’s project page, the work is 38% complete, with 218 days remaining before the target completion date of October 30.
