Downtown Mansfield’s Main Street Improvement Project is continuing to move forward, with recent work bringing visible changes to several blocks in the heart of the city. Downtown Mansfield Inc. shared its latest construction update this past week, outlining what crews completed between May 2 and May 15 and what residents, visitors, and business owners can expect through the end of the month.
The project remains active across multiple downtown blocks, with work focused on sidewalks, curbs, signals, utilities, plaza walls, landscaping features, and streetscape improvements.
Two Weeks Of Progress
Over the last two weeks, crews completed excavation and grading between Park Avenue and Third Street, while also continuing work on plaza walls and stone veneer installation. Several behind-the-scenes elements also moved ahead. Irrigation lines and electrical conduit were installed between Park and Third, laying the groundwork for the landscaping and lighting features that will help shape the finished look of Main Street. Tree grates have also been installed, another sign of the downtown streetscape taking form.
Traffic and pedestrian improvements were part of the recent work as well. Vehicular and pedestrian signals were installed at Fifth and Sixth streets, with additional signal work completed elsewhere in the project area. Curb work also advanced. New curb was poured between Second and Third streets, between Second and Park, and along Park Avenue between Diamond and Walnut. Crews also placed curb between First and Second streets and along Park Avenue between Diamond and Walnut.
Between Third and Fourth streets, stone veneer installation continued on walls, adding one of the more visible design elements to the downtown improvement effort.
What Comes Next
Through May 31, crews are expected to continue work on plaza walls and stone veneer installation on walls and flower beds between Third and Fifth streets. Curb and walk installations are also scheduled between First and Third streets, while additional vehicular and pedestrian signals will be installed and wired.
Drainage work is planned along Park Avenue and South Walnut Street, and decorative light poles are expected to be installed between First and Second streets. Additional topsoil placement and tree grate installation are also part of the upcoming work.
Taken together, the next round of activity will continue shifting the project from underground and structural work toward the streetscape details that will define the finished downtown corridor.
Park Streets Now Two-Way
Downtown Mansfield Inc. is also reminding drivers that South Park Street and North Park Street are now operating as two-way streets. Both streets remain fully accessible during construction. Because Main Street is closed on the western side of both Park streets, drivers may enter and exit from the east side, off Diamond Street. The two-way configuration will become permanent. The change is designed to improve access to businesses around the square and make downtown navigation easier for both visitors and residents.
Businesses Remain Open
While construction continues, downtown businesses remain open and accessible.
Downtown Mansfield Inc. encouraged residents and visitors to continue supporting restaurants, shops, and other businesses on and around the square during the improvement project. The message was simple: downtown is still open, and local businesses will appreciate the traffic while the work continues around them.
