It is peak season for wildflowers here in Richland County. There is a narrow window each year when the forest floor in our corner of north central Ohio quietly comes alive. For a few short weeks, before the trees leaf out and cast their deep summer shade, sunlight reaches the ground in full. What follows is one of Ohio’s most fleeting and rewarding natural displays: the emergence of spring wildflowers, often called ephemerals for the briefness of their bloom.
From early April through mid-May, local woodlands transform into a shifting tapestry of white, blue, and yellow. It is a show that rewards those who arrive at just the right moment.
