On Wednesday afternoons this winter, laughter and quick thinking will once again fill the halls of the Renaissance Theatre. The Renaissance Performing Arts Education Department has announced the return of Improv Underground, a free course in theatre improvisation offered as part of the 2025-26 Mechanics Bank Education Series.

The program invites young people to step away from scripts and discover what happens when imagination takes the lead. Through a mix of theatre games and spontaneous scene work, students practice listening, responding, and trusting their instincts. Organizers say those simple exercises often lead to bigger changes, including stronger confidence and easier communication in everyday life.

Who Can Join

Improv Underground is open to students ages 14 to 19. Younger teens between 12 and 14 may also take part with approval from the instructor. No previous theatre experience is required, only a willingness to try something new and a readiness to laugh at the unexpected.

Classes meet at the Renaissance Theatre each Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The course begins on February 18, 2026 and continues through Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Participants will have the chance to show what they have learned during an open mic style performance on Wednesday evening, April 8, at the Renaissance Theatre 166 venue.

A Familiar Face at the Helm

Leading the class is Dauphne Maloney, a name well known to families in the Mansfield area for her years of work with youth theatre. Maloney’s approach focuses on teamwork and encouragement, helping students feel safe enough to take creative risks.

How to Sign Up

Registration is available online at www.rentickets.org. Students may also reserve a spot by emailing dauphne@mansfieldtickets.com. Families with questions about Improv Underground or other Renaissance education programs can reach Maloney at 419-522-2726, ext. 212.

For teens looking for a place to be themselves, meet new friends, and learn the art of thinking on their feet, Wednesday afternoons at the Renaissance might be exactly the right stage.
