A new musical rooted in one of cinema’s strangest early landmarks is coming to Theatre 166 this June, bringing with it a story of superstition, accusation, and the dangerous speed with which a community can turn on itself.
Häxan: A Witchcraft Musical will be presented over two weekends, June 5-7 and June 12-14, as part of the Emerging Artists Series. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM, with Sunday matinees at 2:30 PM. The production is based on Häxan, Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 silent film exploring witchcraft, religious fear, and the history of persecution. More than a century later, its themes remain unsettlingly familiar.
A Story Of Suspicion
Set in medieval Sweden, the musical follows a village caught in a wave of fear as members of the clergy hunt for witches. In that atmosphere, suspicion spreads quickly. Neighbors accuse neighbors. Fear becomes contagious. Before long, no one is beyond question.
The show asks a pointed question: “Why do we keep burning each other?” That question gives the work its contemporary edge. While the story is set in a distant time and place, its concerns feel recognizable: division, moral panic, public accusation, and the human impulse to find someone to blame.
A New Musical In Development
Häxan is being presented as a Developmental Production, meaning audiences will be seeing a brand-new work still in progress. The production is part of the nationally recognized Emerging Artist Program, which gives new theatrical voices a place to build, test, and refine original work.
The book and lyrics are by Ryan Shealy, with music and lyrics by Aaron Nicolas. Shealy also directs the production, with Nicolas serving as musical director.
Cast And Creative Team
The cast includes Samantha Woodill as Karna, Jacob Poiner as Brother Henrik, Nikki Stitak as Sister Cecilia, Mindy Tishue as Maria, Ethan Chapman as Soldier/Satan/Coven, Zakari Ramos as Brother John, McKenna Stoffer as Trina, Haley Bedocs as Mother/Coven, Nykera Gardner as Anna, George Swarn as Brother Rasmus, Darius Darmody as Soldier/Coven, and Molly McClanahan as Apelone/Coven. Together, they will bring to the stage a world of clergy, villagers, soldiers, coven members, and figures both human and supernatural.
