For students considering a future in environmental science, conservation, or public land management, the Richland County Park District is again opening the door to hands-on experience.

The district is offering paid and unpaid winter and summer internships for high school and college students who have demonstrated initiative and an interest in helping advance the mission of the Park District. Each year, two students are selected to grow toward career goals in environmental science through focused work in either Environmental Education and Public Relations or Natural Resource Management.

Environmental Education & Public Relations

This internship centers on building education and public engagement skills. Interns assist with educational planning, outreach programming, and community relations. Responsibilities include helping develop and implement programs, supporting animal ambassador care and handling, and creating press releases and other communication materials.

The role requires interns to work closely with staff while building interpersonal and communication skills. Efficient, confident public interaction is a core expectation. Interns serve as representatives of the Park District, engaging visitors and helping strengthen relationships throughout the community. Beyond daily duties, interns may pursue special interest projects. Past examples include maintaining the RCPD intern blog and supporting public-facing initiatives tied to local conservation efforts.

Natural Resource Management

For students drawn to fieldwork and ecological stewardship, the Natural Resource Management internship offers direct exposure to conservation practice. This position focuses on building knowledge in resource management principles through active stewardship projects. Work may include invasive species removal, habitat restoration and enhancement, surveying and inventorying plant and animal species, monitoring ecological conditions, and mapping using GIS technology.

Interns work alongside staff to maintain Park District properties while developing identification skills in native, non-native, and invasive species. Effective communication is also required in this role. Natural Resource interns are expected to serve as ambassadors, engaging with park visitors and fostering positive community relationships while working in the field.

Past interns have participated in surveying, monitoring, and mapping flora and fauna species, contributing meaningful data to long-term conservation planning.

Professional Development and Networking

In addition to daily responsibilities, interns are provided educational opportunities designed to support professional growth. That includes attending conferences and participating in field trips across Richland County to deepen their understanding of Ohio’s natural history. These experiences expand knowledge beyond textbooks and introduce students to professionals working across the environmental field.

A Local Investment in Future Stewards

Internships like these serve a dual purpose. They provide students with practical experience while strengthening the Park District’s ongoing conservation and public education efforts. Students interested in applying can review full job descriptions and application requirements through the Richland County website.
