A familiar tradition is getting a historic twist. The Ohio State Fair is inviting artists across the state to help visually define a milestone year, tying together state pride, national history, and one of Ohio’s most recognizable summer events.
The 2026 Ohio State Fair Poster Contest is now open, and this year’s theme is anything but ordinary. With America approaching its 250th anniversary, organizers are encouraging artists to lean into patriotic imagery while keeping the fair itself front and center. This is not about nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It is about showing how Ohio fits into a much bigger American story.
A Poster With a Job to Do
The poster is not just artwork for a gallery wall. It becomes the face of the fair. Winning designs are reproduced, promoted, and seen by hundreds of thousands of people across Ohio and beyond.
Artists are asked to reflect the energy and spirit of the Ohio State Fair while also nodding to America’s 250th birthday. That can mean red, white, and blue. It can also mean agriculture, innovation, music, food, rides, or Ohio’s role in the nation’s history. What matters most is clarity. The words “Ohio State Fair” and the 2026 fair dates, July 29 through Aug. 9, must be part of the design. The poster needs to work at full size and when scaled down to postcards or digital use.
Who Can Enter and What to Know
The contest is open to Ohio residents age 18 and older. Both professional and amateur artists are welcome, but each person may submit only one entry. Artwork must be family friendly and related directly to the Ohio State Fair. Submissions are digital only. High-quality JPG or PDF files are required, sized at 24 inches by 36 inches in portrait orientation. Artists must also disclose the medium used.

What the Winner Receives and What They Give Up
Five entries will be recognized, but one Grand Champion will take the spotlight. The winning artist receives $1,000, a ribbon, social media promotion, local media opportunities, and daily access to the fair with family tickets. It is a strong package, especially for artists looking to expand their public profile.
There is a tradeoff. While the artist retains copyright, ownership of the finished artwork transfers to the Ohio Expositions Commission. The fair may reproduce the design for marketing, merchandise, and promotional use. That is standard for contests of this scale, but it is worth understanding before entering.
For many artists, the exposure and legacy of having their work represent the Ohio State Fair during a landmark national anniversary will outweigh the loss of control.
