John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, spent much of his life traveling through the Mansfield and Richland County area. He planted apple trees that provided food and useful land claims for early settlers, and local history accounts say he spent the majority of his life in this region despite dying in Indiana. 🎨 ManAfest prepares for a full Saturday downtown
Published Monday: The eighth annual ManAfest will bring artists, musicians, authors, chalk muralists and community organizations to Fourth Street from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday.
Activities will be centered around Richland Academy and 101 Tea Company. Mansfield Shakespeare Company, Stellar Robotics and several local performers are scheduled to participate. The festival will coincide with other downtown attractions, including Oktoberfest activities, a Secret City Tour and evening art events. Read Monday’s Richland Source preview.
🖼️ “Cabinet of Curiosities” opens today
Friday preview, taking effect Monday: A new juried exhibition featuring work by local artists opens today in the second-floor atrium of the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library’s Main Library.
“A Cabinet of Curiosities” explores wonder, mystery and beauty in the natural world. Admission is free, and the exhibition will remain on display through November 13. The Main Library is open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM today. Read the Mansfield News Journal report.
🚧 Road closures continue across Richland County
Friday ODOT notice, active Monday: U.S. Route 42 remains closed between Cedarwood Drive and Gables Boulevard for a culvert replacement. State Route 314 is also closed north of Millsboro Road, with reopening expected Friday.
Nightly lane closures continue on Interstate 71 between the Ashland County line and State Route 13 from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Drivers will also encounter lane restrictions on portions of routes 13, 42, 95 and 97. See the complete ODOT construction update.
🏠 Shelby homeownership program seeks prospective buyers
Earlier announcement, applications available now: Six energy-efficient homes are planned for Oak and Second streets through the Welcome Home Homeownership program.
The three-bedroom, two-bath homes will be priced at $200,000. Buyers must meet program requirements, earn no more than 120% of Richland County’s area median income and complete a financial-literacy course. 🌱 Recovery celebration recognizes local progress
Weekend carryover: Catalyst Life Services held its fifth annual New Beginnings Recovery Celebration during Recovery Month.
The gathering recognized program alumni and community partners while emphasizing that recovery is possible. Doug Newsome received the Heart of Service Award after marking 12 years of sobriety and helping other residents reach treatment, employment and support services. Read the weekend coverage.
