🦋 Richland County fun fact

More than 40 luminous glass-and-steel pollinator sculptures are currently scattered across Kingwood Center Gardens. The centerpiece is a 15-foot-tall Monarch Archway featuring six oversized butterflies perched on steel milkweed branches. Because today is Extra Hours Thursday, the gardens remain open until 9:00 PM. 🏗️ Shelby advances housing and downtown projects

Shelby is moving ahead with several residential, commercial and recreation projects. Plans include six homes near Second Street, 50 modular homes at the former Lee Street Trailer Park and 24 market-rate apartments on Mansfield Avenue. The former First National Bank building is also slated to become La Banca, combining an Italian restaurant, boutique hotel and rooftop viewing area. Other proposals include additional pickleball courts, new e-bike rules downtown and a major reconstruction of Mickey Road in 2027 and 2028. Read the WMFD report.

🗣️ Police-community town hall begins tonight

The first in a planned series of Mansfield police-community town halls will begin at 5:30 PM today at Greater Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Church, 182 S. Adams St. The meetings grew from discussions involving Mayor Jodie Perry, Police Chief Jason Bammann and NAACP Unit 3190. Residents will be able to ask questions about police policies and procedures and discuss concerns involving recent uses of force. Read the August 27 Tribune-Courier.

🏫 Madison Primary begins a new era

Madison Local Schools is beginning the year with all preschool through second-grade students attending Madison Primary inside the former Madison South Elementary building. Principal Jessica Shaffner and Assistant Principal Regan Pore, both Madison graduates, are leading the newly consolidated school. Their arrival comes as the district transitions from neighborhood elementary schools to grade-specific buildings. Read the Richland Source feature.

✂️ Shelby fundraiser puts a haircut to a community vote

Black Fork Brewing employee Haylee Kahler is letting donors determine how much of her hair she will cut for Children With Hair Loss. Every $1 donated counts as one vote for a shoulder-length cut, a partial side shave or a complete head shave. Kahler began growing her hair two years ago, and everything cut will be donated. Voting continues through October 24, followed by a live haircut at the brewery October 25. Read the WMFD story or see fundraiser details.

US Field of Honor will bring 500 flags to Ontario

The Mansfield Kiwanis Club will display 500 American flags at Hawkins Corner in Ontario from September 5 through September 12. The fourth annual Field of Honor recognizes veterans, active military personnel and first responders. A ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks will begin at noon September 11, with retired Maj. Gen. John C. Harris Jr. as keynote speaker. 🚰 Burns Street boil advisory lifted

Mansfield’s Water Repair Department has lifted the precautionary boil advisory for Burns Street between Allison Avenue and Stark Street. The city reported that all water samples returned negative results confirming water purity. Read the city notice.
