If you’re heading into downtown Mansfield around lunchtime this week, you’ll want to give yourself an extra minute or two to think about parking.
Starting now through approximately March 25, there’s no parking on the north side of South Park Street as crews begin work to widen the roadway. It’s part of a larger shift that will eventually bring two-way traffic and perpendicular parking to the corridor, a change aimed at making it easier to reach Central Park businesses. See a map below.
That long-term payoff is real. Two-way streets tend to slow traffic slightly, increase visibility for storefronts, and make it less confusing for first-time visitors to navigate downtown. But in the short term, it does mean a bit of adjustment, especially during the noon rush.
Here’s the practical reality: if you drive in expecting your usual spot, you may end up circling longer than you’d like. The fix is simple, but you do have to be intentional.
Parking options right now include:
- The south side of South Park Street
- North Park Street
- The Mechanics Bank lot (paid)
And importantly, the businesses that anchor that stretch are very much open.
You can still grab lunch or stop in at:
- Reindeer Grill
- Coney Island Inn
- Mansfield Sporting Arms
- Johnson Brothers Jewelry and Loan
- Uncle John’s Place
There’s a tendency during construction cycles for people to subconsciously avoid an area, assuming access is worse than it actually is. That’s the risk here. If enough people skip the trip, even briefly, it can hit small businesses right when they need consistency.
So the smarter move is not to avoid downtown, but to approach it differently. Park once, walk a half block if needed, and treat it as part of the experience rather than a hassle.
By early spring, the inconvenience fades. What’s left is a street that’s easier to use, more inviting to visitors, and better aligned with how downtown Mansfield is trying to function.
For now, it’s just a matter of planning ahead before you head out at 12:00 PM.
