As warmer weather settles into north central Ohio, the Village of Lexington is reminding residents that summer brings more than sunshine, cookouts, and neighborhood activity. It also brings a familiar list of property maintenance rules meant to keep streets, yards, drainage systems, and public spaces in good shape.

In a notice shared this week through the Lexington Minute, the Village offered residents a seasonal checklist covering lawn care, grass clippings, parking, garbage cans, chickens, garage sale signs, and permits.

Keeping Lawns Under Control

The Village reminded residents that lawns must be properly tended, with grass and weeds kept below six inches in height. It is one of the most visible signs of summer property maintenance, especially as rain and sunshine combine to speed up growth across the village. Regular mowing, the notice suggests, is not just a matter of appearance, but part of keeping neighborhoods orderly and in compliance with local rules.

Grass Clippings And Stormwater

The Village also highlighted an issue that can be easy to overlook after mowing: grass clippings left in the street and according to the notice, clippings can create significant problems for the stormwater drainage system. Residents are asked to make sure any grass blown into the street is cleared away after mowing.

That reminder is especially timely during a season when heavy rains can quickly turn blocked drains into standing water problems.

Where Cars Should Be Parked

The Village prohibits parking vehicles on front lawns. Cars should be parked on an improved surface, such as a driveway, or along the street when driveway space is not available. The notice also points out an exception for special events lasting less than four hours. The rule is aimed at preventing damage to lawns and preserving the appearance and function of residential properties.

Trash Cans, Chickens, And Garage Sale Signs

Residents are also reminded that garbage cans must be stored away after they have been emptied. The notice includes a reminder on chickens as well: Lexington does not permit chickens on properties smaller than five acres.

Garage sale signs also received attention. Signs may not be placed in the right of way, which is the area between the sidewalk and the street. They are also prohibited on municipal property and may not be attached to utility poles. After a sale ends, signs should be taken down promptly.

Permits Before Projects

For residents planning outdoor projects, the Village is urging a check on permit requirements before work begins. Permits are required for new construction, decks, fences, signs, and driveways. They are also required for reconstruction of an already permitted structure, including projects such as widening a driveway.

Residents with questions may contact Lexington Village Hall at 44 West Main Street, call 419-884-0765, or visit lexingtonohio.us. The notice also lists admin@lexingtonohio.us as a contact email.
