Residents in an travelers to the Mansfield area are being urged to stay alert after police reported dangerous devices known as jackrocks scattered along a local roadway.

The Mansfield Division of Police issued a public safety alert this week after the sharp metal objects were discovered near the intersection of Middle Bellville Road and Straub Road. Authorities say the devices pose a serious hazard because they are designed to puncture vehicle tires. Drivers traveling through the area are encouraged to proceed cautiously and remain aware of anything unusual in the roadway.

What Jackrocks Are

Jackrocks, sometimes referred to as caltrops, are small metal devices made with several sharp points. Their design ensures that when they land on a surface, at least one spike points upward. When placed on pavement, the devices can quickly puncture tires and disable vehicles. Even a few scattered across a roadway can create a dangerous situation for motorists, especially at normal traffic speeds. Because of the risk involved, these devices are treated as both a safety hazard and potential evidence in a criminal investigation.

How Police Respond

When reports of jackrocks or similar hazards come in, officers focus first on protecting drivers and responders.

Traffic control typically becomes the immediate priority. Police may slow or stop vehicles in the area, position cruisers to shield responders from traffic, and deploy cones or flares to alert approaching motorists. Once the roadway is secure, officers use tools such as brooms, shovels, or magnets to collect the devices. They are generally not picked up by hand because the sharp points can easily puncture gloves or cause injury. The recovered jackrocks are then placed in rigid containers so they cannot puncture bags or injure personnel during transport.

Investigation And Reporting

After the immediate danger is cleared, officers document the scene. This can include photographing the location, noting how the devices were scattered, and collecting samples for potential forensic analysis. Investigators may examine details such as the type of metal used, weld marks, or construction methods that could help link the devices to a suspect.

Police reports also typically record whether any vehicles were damaged and how long the roadway had to be partially or fully closed while crews worked.

What Residents Should Do

Police are asking drivers who may have experienced tire damage in the area to contact the Mansfield Division of Police to file a report. Anyone who may have information about the person or persons responsible is encouraged to call the department at 419-522-1234.

Authorities say community awareness is important in situations like this. A quick call from a resident who notices suspicious activity or unusual objects on the road can help prevent injuries and protect other drivers.
