A Mansfield man has been arrested and charged in connection with a death investigation in Mifflin, according to the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ashland County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher R. Tunnell announced that charges have been filed in Ashland County Court of Common Pleas, where Judge David Stimpert is presiding. The charges stem from a February 19 incident at a residence in Mifflin.
Emergency Response on Maine Street
At approximately 5:04 PM on February 19, emergency crews from the Mifflin Township Fire Department, Mifflin Village Police Department, and the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 39 Maine Street in Mifflin on a report of an unresponsive person. First responders located Brandon Nathaniel Sheaffer, 26, of Mifflin, unconscious inside the home. Life-saving measures were initiated at the scene, but Sheaffer did not survive.
The Ashland County Coroner’s Office has not yet determined the official cause and manner of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
Charges Filed Against Mansfield Man
As a result of the investigation to date, Joseph Frederick Doering, 39, of Mansfield, has been charged with reckless homicide, a third-degree felony, and possession of methamphetamine, a fifth-degree felony.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the charges allege that Doering recklessly caused Sheaffer’s death during an incident in which the two were allegedly engaged in methamphetamine use and other high-risk behavior. Detectives reported locating methamphetamine and additional evidence inside the residence. Doering was taken into custody and remains incarcerated at the Ashland County Jail.
Bond Hearing Scheduled
A bond hearing is scheduled for 8:30 AM on Monday, February 23, 2026, in Ashland County Court of Common Pleas. The Ashland County Grand Jury is expected to review the case at a later date to consider whether additional charges are warranted.
Prosecutors emphasized that a charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
