On January 6, the Main Library of the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library quietly enters a new phase. Construction begins on what staff describe as the first visible step toward a full-fledged Creation Lab, a space designed to let patrons turn ideas into physical projects. This is not a quick refresh. It is a long-view investment in how people learn, create, and build skills together. When doors reopen in spring 2026, the second floor will look and function very differently.

What’s Being Built, and Why It Matters

The Creation Lab is envisioned as a hands-on maker space that complements the library’s existing Learning Lab services. Think less passive screen time and more active making.

Planned equipment includes 3D printers, 3D pens, a Cricut®, an embroidery machine, and additional tools still being evaluated. The idea is to give residents access to technology that is often too expensive or impractical to own at home, while pairing it with staff guidance so beginners are not left guessing. This approach matters in a community where workforce development, creative entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning often overlap. A library maker space is not about novelty. It is about access.

What’s Closing, and What’s Not

The Learning Lab, located on the second floor in the Adult Reference area, will close temporarily starting January 6 due to construction. That space normally provides public computers, technology classes, job application and résumé help, and one-on-one tech assistance.

Here is the key point: services are continuing, even if the room is not. During construction, technology classes will move into other community spaces within the Main Library. A Learning Lab staff member will be stationed at the Reference Desk to help with questions, appointments, and technology support.

One-on-one appointments are still available, as is access to Creation Station equipment by reservation. To schedule help or reserve equipment, patrons can call 419.521.3146 or email learning@mrcpl.org.

Studying During Construction

Construction noise is the one thing the library cannot fully control, and staff are candid about that.

If the sound becomes distracting, patrons have options. The Main Library offers soundproof study pods, as well as available meeting rooms that can be used for quieter work. It is not a perfect solution, but it is a practical one, and staff are prepared to help people find the best alternative on any given day.

Classes and Appointments Continue

Yes, classes will still happen. Yes, one-on-one appointments will still be offered.

The difference is location, not availability. Class schedules and room assignments may shift, so checking the events calendar or asking at the Reference Desk is encouraged. Staff can also be reached directly at 419.521.3146 to confirm details.

Looking Ahead to Spring 2026

When construction wraps up, patrons can expect a refreshed Learning Lab with bold new colors, updated technology, and a new copy machine. More importantly, it will sit alongside a brand-new Creation Lab designed for experimentation, learning, and creative confidence.

Libraries are often judged by what they preserve. This project is about what they enable. Spring 2026 is still a ways off. But starting January 6, the groundwork for that future begins.
