For more than three decades, a $1,000 scholarship from Advantage Credit Union has helped local students begin their college journeys. This year, the program enters a new chapter. For the 2026 cycle, the Marilyn Archer Scholarship has been expanded to include all graduating high school seniors connected to Richland County. Students no longer need to be members of the credit union to apply. Instead, eligibility now reflects the broader community the organization serves. Any senior who lives, works, attends school, or attends church in Richland County may now be considered.

After 30 years, what was once a member-based opportunity has become a countywide one.

A Community Investment, Not Just a Member Benefit

Advantage Credit Union has long positioned itself as a community partner, and this move reinforces that identity. By removing the membership requirement, the organization has aligned its scholarship with its service area rather than its account list. It is a practical shift and a meaningful one. The $1,000 award is intended to assist with first-year college expenses, whether that means tuition, textbooks, housing deposits, or other early costs that often catch families off guard. While no single scholarship eliminates the financial pressure of higher education, this one can ease the transition in a tangible way. For students standing at the threshold of adulthood, that support carries weight.

What Students Need to Know

The application process remains structured but manageable. Seniors must submit a completed cover sheet, a 500-word essay responding to the prompt listed there, a high school transcript, a list of extracurricular activities, and a statement of desire outlining their educational goals. All materials are due Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Students interested in applying can access the cover sheet through Advantage Credit Union’s website. As with any competitive award, applicants would be wise to give themselves time. A thoughtful essay and organized submission will stand out far more than something assembled at the last minute.

Although membership is not required to apply, the credit union continues to welcome new student members. Any senior who wishes to join may do so with the institution covering the initial $5 opening deposit. Students can visit the Ontario office at 700 Stumbo Road between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, bringing a valid government-issued photo ID.

Honoring the Legacy of Marilyn Archer

The scholarship carries the name of Marilyn Archer, a former employee and longtime volunteer who devoted more than 30 years of service to Advantage Credit Union. The award was created to honor her memory and the courage she demonstrated during a four-year battle with cancer. In many ways, the expansion of this scholarship feels consistent with that legacy. It reflects service, resilience, and a belief in investing in others. By broadening eligibility, the credit union extends that spirit of commitment beyond its membership to the entire Richland County senior class.

A Deadline Worth Marking

Graduating seniors already face a calendar filled with decisions, celebrations, and deadlines. Adding one more date to remember may feel like a small burden, but March 31, 2026, is worth circling. This scholarship represents both financial assistance and community recognition. For 30 years it has helped students take their next step. Now, for the first time, that opportunity belongs to every eligible senior in Richland County.
