A familiar piece of Mansfield’s past is returning to the heart of downtown.

The first of two decorative arches planned for the Main Street Improvement Project arrived Tuesday, October 13, marking another milestone in the city’s $20.3 million downtown transformation.

The arches are among the most recognizable features of the project, designed to frame the Central Park area and create distinctive entrances to the city’s historic downtown core. Their appearance recalls the decorative archways that once graced Mansfield’s streets in the early 20th century, including those associated with the city’s 1908 centennial celebration.

The new structures will span Main Street near Central Park, with their designs incorporating the name “Mansfield.” Architectural renderings also show decorative lighting that will make the arches visible after dark.

The Final Pieces Come Together

The arrival comes as the Main Street Improvement Project approaches its scheduled October 31 completion.

Construction began in February 2025 and has included major underground utility replacements, reconstructed sidewalks, decorative brick crosswalks, new lighting, landscaping, and improvements to public gathering areas.

One of the most significant changes will be the restoration of two-way traffic on Main Street, reversing the one-way configuration that has shaped downtown travel for decades.

At the October 6 Mansfield City Council meeting, Mayor Jodie Perry confirmed that substantial construction remained on schedule for completion by the end of the month. She also indicated that a celebration is being planned for November 6, with additional events expected downtown that weekend.

Architectural rendering of the decorative arch

For a downtown that has endured months of construction, the arrival of the first arch offers something tangible: a glimpse of the finished streetscape and a new landmark that connects Mansfield’s history with its future.

More project information and design renderings are available through the City of Mansfield’s Main Street project website.
