The Ohio State University at Mansfield has been named an “Opportunity College” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, a distinction achieved by only 16% of colleges and universities in the United States.

For campus leaders, the designation puts national data behind something they say has long been visible in classrooms, advising offices, and student success stories across the Mansfield campus.

“This is hard evidence of what the faculty and staff of our campus have known for years: That the Mansfield campus of The Ohio State University enables students to flourish and thrive,” said Jason Opal, Dean and Director of Ohio State Mansfield.

What The Designation Means

To be named an Opportunity College, an institution must score highly in two areas: access and earnings.

High access means students from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds are able to enroll. High earnings means graduates go on to earn significantly more than comparable peers in their region within eight years of graduation. That combination is not common. Highly selective institutions, including Ivy League universities, often produce high-earning graduates but remain difficult and expensive to enter. Many more affordable or open-access colleges serve a broader student population, but their graduates do not always earn substantially more than regional peers.

Opportunity Colleges are recognized for doing both: enrolling a broad range of students while producing a strong return on investment.

“It’s a kind of ‘Goldilocks’ designation,” Opal said.

Mansfield’s Place In The Data

Ohio State Mansfield follows an open enrollment policy and serves a high percentage of Pell-eligible and first-generation students, placing it firmly in the high-access category. According to the Carnegie study, graduates of the Mansfield campus earn 1.77 times what their peers do eight years after graduation, making the campus an exceptionally high-earning institution under the classification.

Opal said that comparison is especially striking when placed beside far more selective and expensive institutions.

“I began my career at a selective, expensive college in Maine, and its graduates earn about 1.7 times their peers. The Ohio State University at Mansfield delivers higher returns at a fraction of the cost, not to mention a fraction of the stress of applying,” he said.

Access Set To Expand Further

The recognition comes as Ohio State prepares to expand affordability across its regional campuses. Beginning this fall, the new Regional Campus Commitment will allow students from middle- and lower-income families to begin their Ohio State education at regional campuses tuition-free. The benefit remains in place as long as students continue to qualify, whether they remain at a regional campus or later transition to the Columbus campus.

For Ohio State Mansfield, the designation reinforces a message that has become central to its identity: students do not have to choose between access and academic value.

“Our goal is to be excellent, not exclusive,” Opal said. “We’re just getting started.”
