Beginning in Fall 2026, students at The Ohio State University at Mansfield will have a new opportunity to explore leadership training through one of the university’s longest-standing programs.
The Ohio State University Army ROTC program has announced that it will expand its leadership and military science curriculum to the Mansfield regional campus, offering Military Science 1101 in Fall 2026 and Military Science 1102 in Spring 2027. The move brings the Buckeye Battalion’s foundational ROTC coursework to Mansfield students, allowing them to begin exploring the program without traveling to Columbus and without making an initial military commitment.
Leadership Without An Immediate Commitment
The new courses are designed as an introduction to Army ROTC, military science, and personal leadership development. Military Science 1101 will focus on personal development and leadership, while Military Science 1102 will introduce students to tactical leadership.
For students who are curious about the ROTC pathway but not yet ready to make a long-term decision, the Mansfield expansion offers an accessible first step.
The curriculum focuses on leadership fundamentals, personal growth, and the role of the military in society. Those skills can apply across a wide range of future careers, whether students ultimately pursue military service or use the experience in civilian professions.
Removing A Geographic Barrier
By bringing the courses to Ohio State Mansfield, the university is making it easier for regional campus students to explore ROTC while continuing their general education requirements close to home. For those who choose to continue, the courses can become the beginning of a path toward commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.
“The expansion to the Mansfield campus reflects our commitment to developing leaders of character across the entire Ohio State community,” said LTC Steven Spiker, Professor of Military Science at The Ohio State University. “We are excited to bring the rigor and excellence of the Army ROTC program to a new group of dedicated students.”
A Student-First Approach
Students who enroll in Army ROTC courses receive professional mentorship, leadership development, and physical fitness training as part of the program experience. According to the program, its approach emphasizes academic success first, while helping students build discipline, resilience, confidence, and practical leadership skills. That structure may be especially meaningful for students at regional campuses, where many balance coursework with work, family responsibilities, commuting, and other commitments.
