1. 🧭 Leadership programs unite under Richland LEADS
The Mansfield News Journal reported this morning that the Mansfield-Richland Area Educational Foundation is bringing its leadership programs together under the Richland LEADS name. The umbrella includes LeaderRichland, Young Leaders Institute, Engage Richland, Leadership Unlimited, the Richland Area Executive Leadership Program and Discover Richland Tours. Programs now reach participants ranging from middle-school students to senior executives.

2. 🌳 Residents urged to inspect maple trees for invasive beetle
A second Mansfield News Journal story published this morning urges residents to watch for the Asian longhorned beetle, an invasive insect that attacks maple and other hardwood trees. August is designated “Tree Check Month” because adult beetles and the damage they cause are easier to spot during late summer. Warning signs include round exit holes, sawdust-like material and shiny black beetles with white spots and long, banded antennae.
What to do: Photograph suspected beetles or damage and report the sighting to the USDA online or at 1-866-702-9938. The alert does not mean an infestation has been confirmed in Richland County.
3. 🍄 Mansfield workshop teaches residents to grow mushrooms
A hands-on culinary mushroom workshop is scheduled from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM today in Ovalwood Hall at Ohio State Mansfield. Participants will learn how to select hardwood logs, inoculate them with mushroom spawn and care for the logs while shiitake mushrooms develop. The $15 registration fee includes lunch, materials and an inoculated log to take home.
The bigger picture: The Ohio Woodland Stewards and OSU Extension program combines home food production with practical woodland-management education.
4. US Revolutionary War exhibit returns in Bellville
The American Revolution Experience traveling exhibit is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM today at the Ohio Genealogical Society’s Samuel D. Isaly Library, 611 State Route 97 W. The free exhibit uses display panels, digital kiosks, illustrations and primary accounts to introduce visitors to the ordinary people affected by the Revolution. Today’s additional program, beginning at 2:00 PM, examines artificial intelligence and genealogy.
Why it matters: The exhibit connects the nation’s 250th-anniversary observance with Richland County’s strong interest in genealogy and early American history.
5. 🎷 Shelby mixes city business with live jazz
Shelby has three public meetings scheduled today: the Shade Tree Commission at 1:00 PM, the Public Works and General Operations Committee at 3:30 PM and the Planning Commission at 4:30 PM. The evening shifts from civic business to music when Just Jazz Live performs from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Black Fork Commons Plaza. The downtown concert provides a free, relaxed finish to a meeting-heavy Tuesday.

Mansfield’s historic South Park blockhouse was originally built on the downtown square in 1812 as protection during the War of 1812. After the immediate danger passed, the building served as Richland County’s first courthouse and jail from 1813 through 1816. The preserved structure was eventually moved to South Park, where it anchors the city’s early American history complex.
