Shelby Named Tree City USA For 38th Consecutive Year

It’s hard to imagine getting through a hot, humid Ohio summer without the benefit of a wonderful shade tree — and our state has its fair share of them!

Across the country, and Ohio, some cities make the effort to capitalize on these unique natural assets through the Tree City USA program. According to its website, the initiative has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.

More than 3,400 communities have become a Tree City USA by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

This week, the City of Shelby received news that it had been recognized as a Tree City USA for the 38th consecutive year (see below). More…

Ohio Edison Starts $22 Million Tree Trimming Effort

Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is conducting tree trimming and other vegetation management work in communities across its 34-county service area in Ohio to help enhance service reliability for customers. This year’s $22 million tree-trimming program will help keep power flowing to customers around the clock by preventing tree-related outages, such as those that can occur during the spring and summer storm season.

That work will take place in several Richland County and area communities.

On the ground, contractors have trimmed trees along nearly 1,200 miles of electric lines across the Ohio Edison service area. More…

Mansfield Announces Heritage Tree Designations

In a news release on the City of Mansfield website, it was announced this week that two trees have been designated with Heritage Tree status by the City’s Shade Tree Commission.

The City of Mansfield Heritage Tree Program, launched in 2019, is based upon the “National Big Trees” program recognizing Heritage Trees of each species within the City of Mansfield Corporation limits.

The city received ten (10) nominations, which were initially visited by the Shade Tree Commission and then forwarded onto a volunteer who utilizing a “Biltmore stick”, provided accurate measurements and a thorough evaluation of the tree which was nominated. The Commission members at their June 2020 meeting approved the trees to be officially recorded as Heritage Trees
and will make bi-annual awards. More…

Keep On The Lookout For And Report Instances Of Beech Leaf Disease

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) urges Ohioans to identify and report signs of beech leaf disease to minimize risk of disease spread.

Beech leaf disease (BLD) is a newly observed disease affecting American and possibly non-native beech trees. BLD was first discovered in Lake County in 2012 and has quickly spread across northeastern Ohio. Infestations have been found in nine Ohio counties and parts of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada. More…

Second Arbor Day Celebration Planned

The City of Mansfield Shade Tree Commission is pleased to announce the second program offered to celebrate Arbor Day 2018 and their participation in the 22rd Annual Earth Stewardship Celebration.

On Monday, May 14 at 1:00 PM, a representative of the Shade Tree Commission will visit Malabar Intermediate School. Fourth Grade students and give a brief presentation on the history and importance of Arbor Day, as well as discussing the importance of trees in an urban setting.
