A Bromfield Thanksgiving Tale

17 Nov , 2021

By 1812Blockhouse

Publisher’s Note: We join The Ohio State University at Mansfield in celebrating Bromfield Anniversary Week by sharing stories from our archives centering on the Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Today’s story was posted last November.

For Thanksgiving 1943, Louis Bromfield wrote a drama that centered on a young couple, shaped by their American experience – and whose engagement is secretly influenced by deceased ancestors. (The story bears resemblance to Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, with those no longer living taking part in the play).

“Feast From the Harvest” was performed on the radio show Cavalcade of America, which aired different stories each week, and Bromfield was on hand to narrate his tale. More…

Fewer Travelers May Have Contributed To A Safer Thanksgiving Holiday In Ohio, Richland County

2 Dec , 2020

By 1812Blockhouse

A reduced number of traveling motorists may have contributed to a somewhat safer Thanksgiving holiday period on Ohio roads, according to numbers shared by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Provisional numbers indicate that nine people were killed in nine crashes during that five day reporting period (Wednesday at midnight through Sunday at midnight), as compared to 15 fatal crashes in 2019 in which 18 people lost their lives.

Of the nine fatalities this year, four were not wearing a seat belt, and two involved impaired driving, according to the Patrol. More…

Patrol Warns About Drinking And Driving This Thanksgiving Holiday

26 Nov , 2020

While this Thanksgiving may look different, the Ohio State Highway Patrol expects many motorists to travel on Ohio’s roadways for the upcoming holiday. Before motorists hit the road, troopers want to make sure they are taking the proper safety measures by driving sober and wearing their safety belts.

Troopers will be highly visible and cracking down on impaired driving and those failing to wear a safety belt from Wednesday, November 25 at midnight through 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 29.

“We take impaired driving seriously and remain dedicated to promoting safety on Ohio’s roadways,” added Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent. “We need motorists to commit to keeping our roads safe by planning ahead, designating a sober driver and insisting that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.” More…

The Year Of No Turkeys

24 Nov , 2020

By 1812Blockhouse

It was a different kind of Thanksgiving in Mansfield 100 years ago.

For one thing, Mansfielders could travel to watch professional football being played on Thanksgiving Day for the very first time. What was on the average Richland County dinner table that day?

Most likely, it wasn’t a turkey. More…
