Richland County Has First Confirmed Coronavirus Case; Now 119 Statewide

Richland Public Health announced on Thursday that it has been notified of a positive test result for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) for a resident of Richland County. This is the first positive result for Richland County. Richland Public Health is working to identify any close contacts of this resident who would require testing or monitoring for symptoms of COVID-19.

Richland Public Health, along with area hospitals, healthcare providers and community partners have been actively preparing to respond to possible cases of COVID-19 in our community. More…

Ohio Attorney General Says Courts May Suspend Jury Trials During Pandemic

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a formal opinion Wednesday that courts may suspend jury trials to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, and that they may do so consistent with state and federal speedy-trial obligations, a press release announced.

“Only the trial court can continue a case,” Yost said. “This opinion is a review of the law under which prosecutors can request such continuance based on the public health emergency.” More…

Macy’s Temporarily Closes Stores Nationwide

In a move sure to impact retail shopping in Richland County, Macy’s, Inc. has announced a temporary closing of all of its locations.

The company announced on Tuesday that In response to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak, it temporarily closed all stores by end of business on Tuesday, March 17 through March 30. This includes all Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury, Macy’s Backstage, Bloomingdales the Outlet and Market by Macy’s stores. BREAKING: Director of Health Orders Polls Closed Tomorrow

UPDATE:  The Ohio Supreme Court has rejected a legal challenge to the delay. The Primary Election is officially postponed.

Franklin County Judge Refuses State’s Attempt To Delay Primary

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s attempt to delay Ohio’s Primary Election until June 2 did not meet with a positive reaction in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.

Judge Richard Frye denied the State’s request for a temporary restraining order delaying the vote. Frye indicated that the lateness of the request — just hours before the opening of the polls — was not time to weigh the pros and cons of delay. He also indicated that waiting until June would not guarantee a safer voting environment. More…

Ohio Primary Election May Be Postponed; Governor Closes Gyms, Movie Theatres, And More

The movie screens are going dark in Richland County, at least temporarily.

Monday’s daily news conference by the Governor of Ohio, a staple in the last few days as COVID-19 begins to impact Ohioans, had national, statewide, and local ramifications.

Initially resistant to changing the date of Ohio’s Primary Election on Tuesday, Governor DeWine announced that he would recommend that the vote be extended through Tuesday, June 2. Much was shared about the work of local boards of election to make the experience as safe as possible for voters, however the Governor shared that no one should be asked to put their health  at risk in order to exercise a constitutional right and duty.
