Maggie Voedisch’s penchant for keeping kids’ feet moving has spread to Prospect Elementary School with proven academic, as well as physical, benefits.
Voedisch, Mansfield City Schools’ adapted physical education teacher, secured a Gorman Family Foundation grant that allowed her to acquire 30 stationary bicycle pedaling units for students to use while they read. That’s five units for each of Prospect’s second- and third-grade classrooms. More…
Fifty backpacks and several boxes of school supplies were delivered to Prospect Elementary School on Thursday, courtesy of the staff at Richland Correctional Institution (RiCI) and the Women in Corrections Committee.
”Women in Corrections wanted to give back to the community. We began last year by donating backpacks and supplies to Sherman Elementary School,” said Sharon Ochoa, secretary to the RiCI warden. “Again this year RiCI staff donated supplies or funds which allowed us to buy additional backpacks and supplies, items like notebooks, crayons, pencils and glue sticks. A flower and vegetable garden that supplements learning at Prospect Elementary School was a first-place winner this summer in Mansfield’s Seventh Annual Take Pride Earth Stewardship Contest.
Amy Burns, a Prospect occupational therapist who conceived the garden idea, presented a trophy to Prospect Principal Jason Douglas on Thursday. The trophy recognizes Prospect’s success in the schools division of the contest. More…

African American firefighters in Mansfield visited Prospect Elementary School on Thursday to begin a series of Black History Month activities.
The men, whose service with the Mansfield Fire Department totals more than 100 years, talked with third-graders about their experiences as firefighters.The group included Cournal Canada, the city’s first black firefighter; Andrea Cochran, fire inspector; Link Briggs, firefighter/chaplain; Isaiah Finley and retired firefighter Mark Caldwell.
