Ohio Governor Activates More National Guard As Columbus Shutters

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — More than 1,000 Ohio National Guard members have now been activated to head to Washington in preparations for anticipated armed protests ahead of Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Friday.

The request came from the U.S. National Guard Bureau on Thursday night, DeWine said. The governor previously authorized more than 700 Guard members for service in Washington.

DeWine has also authorized 580 National Guard members to provide security around the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus through Wednesday, where they’re expected to be joined by numerous Columbus police officers and troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. More…

Ohio Statehouse, State Offices To Close Amid Protest Threat

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Statehouse and other state buildings in downtown Columbus will be closed through Inauguration Day as police officers, National Guard members and state troopers provide security and authorities prepare for possible protests by supporters of President Donald Trump, Gov. Mike DeWine said Thursday.

“The sad truth is that there are people in our country who want to turn peaceful protests into an opportunity for violence,” said DeWine, a Republican, at a news briefing. “These are violent people, and their violence will not be tolerated in Ohio.” More…

The venerable Ohio Statehouse in Columbus is every Ohioan’s second home.

Since its completion in 1861, it has been the scene for most of the important moments in Ohio political history. President Abraham Lincoln visited the building, and each year 500,000 people do as well.

This year, visits have been limited because of the ongoing pandemic. This means that many Ohioans do not have the opportunity to see the holiday this month.

Columbus Statue To Remain On Ohio Statehouse Grounds For Now

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A statue of Christopher Columbus will not be removed from the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse until at least 2025, officials said Thursday.

The 9-foot-tall, copper statue of Columbus, in place since 1932, will remain erected in front of the Statehouse in the largest city that bears the explorer’s name until a formal process for removal is undergone by the agency that manages the grounds.

In its first meeting since January, one prompted by divisions of the sculpture, the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board voted to draft rules for the first time that would outline a policy of removing a statue or monument off of Capital Grounds — but with a long timeline. More…
