Ohio Receives Large Literacy Grants

The Ohio Department of Education has announced that it has been awarded two competitive grants by the U.S. Department of Education — for a combined total of $43,200,000. These grants focus on improving student literacy from birth through grade 12. The Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant provides funding to establish model literacy sites across Ohio in preschools and elementary, middle and high schools. The model sites will concentrate on implementing practices consistent with Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement. The grant also will support professional learning and coaching. Read More

School Report Cards Released By Ohio Department Of Education

On Thursday, the Ohio Department of Education gave Ohio school districts their annual performance assessments. The Ohio Department of Education’s 2019 School Report Cards are designed to give parents, communities, educators and policymakers information about the performance of districts and schools – to celebrate success and identify areas for improvement. This information identifies schools to receive intensive supports, drives local conversations on continuous improvement, and provides transparent reporting on the performance of students in foundational skills and knowledge and other important outcomes such as graduation and college and career readiness. Ohio Expands Options To Obtain High School Equivalency Certificates

Ohioans now have three testing options for earning a certificate of high school equivalence. The Ohio Department of Education approved GEDHiSET and TASC as the official testing companies for adult learners to use to earn the certificate of high school equivalence, generally considered to be the equivalent of a high school diploma. “For individuals who haven’t earned a high school diploma, earning the certificate of high school equivalence can be a life-changing event,” said Paolo DeMaria, superintendent of public instruction.“ Read More

Applications Now Being Accepted for Expanded EdChoice Scholarship

The Ohio Department of Education is now accepting applications for scholarships for students assigned to underperforming public schools as identified by the Department for the 2018-2019 school year. The awarded scholarships help students attend participating private schools. The income-based EdChoice Scholarship expands to include students entering fifth grade for the first time in 2018-2019.
