Mansfield’s North End To Be Transformed By Urban Farming

To many, the phrase may seem like an oxymoron–farms most typically dot the rural landscape, far removed from the concrete and asphalt of the city. However, residents of Mansfield’s North End will soon see their community beautified—and invigorated—by the creation of an urban farm, in perhaps one of the city’s most surprising and unlikely locations.

Back in 2017, NECIC updated its “North End Community Economic Development Plan,” in which, according to United States Department of Agriculture guidelines, the North End was identified as a “fresh food desert.” More…

Mansfield Schools Free Lunches For Students Program To Continue

A program that permitted Mansfield City Schools to serve free lunches to all students during the 2018-2019 school year, regardless of family income, proved to be a win for both students and the district.

Food service manager Lauren Moran said district cafeterias served an average of 2,500 lunches each day, an increase of about 150 over last year. Not only did more students each lunch, the district received an additional $200,000 in federal lunch reimbursement, more than offsetting the additional costs. More…

Food And Community Come Together At OSUM Symposium

Community leaders in Mansfield are thinking about food and where it comes from a little bit differently today. That’s after The Ohio State University at Mansfield held the 2018 Food Systems Symposium March 1 at Oasis of Love Church in Mansfield.

Over 100 people attended the event. Participants talked about how to address economic, education, diet and food security issues in the community. The goal of the meeting was to discuss how all in the community could work together to create a community-based vision to improve access to safe, affordable and nutritious food in Mansfield and Richland County. Micro-Farm Growing At OSU Mansfield

Updated on 9.17 – This fall something innovative is growing on The Ohio State University at Mansfield campus.

Last month, Kent “Kip” Curtis, Assistant Professor of History, along with Ohio State Mansfield graduate Tyler Arter were joined by 30 students from the Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability program at Ohio State Columbus.
