Those centers of learning include two community colleges, including one here in Richland County. North Central State College and Marion Technical College provide excellent learning opportunities which are also affordable.
Now, that excellence has been recognized with the heads of both of those institutions being nominated for the CEO of the Year Award from the American Association of Community Colleges.
This award is party of the 2023 Awards of Excellence to be made by the AACC, awards which underscore the association’s priorities and brings national visibility to promising practices among its member colleges.

On Monday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that 33 colleges and universities in Ohio will receive a total of $5 million in funding for security projects that enhance the safety of students and staff.
Those receiving funds include North Central State College.
“These funds will go directly toward helping our institutions of higher education become more secure,” said Governor DeWine. “The importance of campus safety cannot be overstated, and Ohio is committed to supporting efforts that keep our colleges and universities safe.”

North Central State College has received approval to confer a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) as a completion degree for students who have completed their Associate Degree in Registered Nursing.
Approval for the completion program was granted to allow NC State to continue working closely with area healthcare providers to meet the critical need for nurses, and the advanced training required for career advancement.
Dorey Diab, President of NC State has been eager to share this news and begin serving our community partners at this new level. “NC State has always been a leader in preparing Licensed Practical and Registered Nurses. This will allow our students to progress to the bachelor’s level in a place they feel comfortable, with faculty they know — and who know them.

Richland County’s two institutions of higher education are among those to benefit from a generous gift from Intel. The announcement came prior to this morning’s groundbreaking at the Intel site in Licking County.
In advance of today’s groundbreaking, Intel announced grants totaling $17.7 million that will fund eight projects at more than 80 Ohio colleges and universities. Included in this announcement was nearly $1.5 million for The Ohio State University and partnering institutions across the state working toward the common goal of a more diverse semiconductor industry.

On Wednesday, Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted made a stop at North Central State College for the announcement of a new Tower Technician Program at the James W. Kehoe Center in Shelby.
The certificate program is a partnership between NC State College and Governor Mike DeWine’s Office of Workforce Training (GOWT). North Central is one of three sites selected across the state for this new training program. The goal of the Tower Technician Program is to provide a reliable stream of qualified employees to support the expanding 5G networking needs of multiple utility providers throughout Ohio.

There is exciting news this week in higher education in Ohio, and Richland County is a part of it!
North Central State College is a part of a new consortium that will connect 14 independent colleges and universities and 10 community colleges in Ohio to maximize opportunities for community college students to obtain four year degrees in at least three subject areas — English, psychology, and biology.
Fueled by a grant from the Teagle Foundation and Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the “Ohio Consortium for Transfer Pathways to the Liberal Arts” will have that as its primary aim — creating a route for seamless educational experiences for students seeking a bachelor’s degree.

North Central State College is taking a serious and considered start to the new year.
That was made clear in a letter sent to the NCSC Community this past week by President &CEO Dorey Diab. Diab shared the basic plan for restarting classes after the first of the year:

For the first time since the Tuition Freedom Scholarship (TFS) Program began, North Central State College will welcome new incoming scholars for the Spring 2021 Semester that begins on January 11, 2021. Traditionally, TFS scholars were required to begin their studies in the fall.
The TFS program has provided $2.4 million in scholarships to graduating high school seniors since fall 2016. The scholarship covers general tuition up to an associate’s degree for students directly enrolling with College Credit Plus (CCP) or articulated credits. Of the 588 TFS scholars, 191 have already earned a degree or certificate. Further, 109 have transferred to a four-year institution. Thanks to scholarships such as TFS, only 21 percent of post high school students at NC State last year took out a loan. More…

There’s no question that Lexington-Springmill Road is a busy place these days.
The trucks and cars may have created more than one loud roar during Wednesday morning’s ribbon cutting at the new campus entrance sign for the campus of The Ohio State University at Mansfield and North Central State College, but the enthusiasm and excitement were clearly evident.

North Central State College President Dr. Dorey Diab has been elected Chair of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges Presidents Council, the group that represents all 23 of the community college presidents throughout Ohio. He replaces Sinclair Community College president Dr. Steve Johnson in that role, who has served as chair over the past two years. In addition to that leadership role, Dr. Diab will also serve as Vice Chair of the organization overall. More…
