Ohio Senate OKs Death Penalty Ban Of Severely Mentally Ill

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio Senate lawmakers approved a measure banning the execution of the severely mentally ill during a lame duck legislative session on Wednesday.

The state House legislation, introduced by GOP Rep. Brett Hillyer, of Uhrichsville, informally passed during a Senate session after receiving broad support from Republicans and Democrats in the General Assembly.

Senate President Larry Obhof, a Medina Republican, supported the bill but believes most Ohioans support the death penalty for some cases and so he wouldn’t support abolition of capital punishment, spokesman John Fortney said last week. More…

The Richland County branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is seeking to make connections between information, support, and those people who have friends and family with mental health conditions.

To this end, NAMI is presenting “Family & Friends,” a free 90 minute seminar that puts those pieces together.

According to NAMI, “Participants learn about diagnoses, treatment, recovery, communication strategies, crisis preparation and NAMI resources. Seminar leaders have personal experience with mental health conditions in their families.” More…

End The Silience: Program Offers Mental Health Support For Students

According to NAMI.org, the website of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in 5 youth between the ages of 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year; only half of these children receive any treatment for their disorder. With suicide listed as the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-34, mental health education and support is clearly becoming a necessity. Training For Families And Friends Of Those With Mental Illness

An insightful and powerful course on supporting loved ones dealing with mental illness will take place this summer at the North End Community Improvement Collaborative’s (NECIC) home in downtown Mansfield.

The free, 12-week course is taught by trained National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) members who have lived with this experience and offers education and support for families and friends of people with mental illness.
