D.A.R.E. Graduation At Malabar

Seventy sixth-graders at Malabar Intermediate School graduated from the 12-week D.A.R.E. program Friday as Officer Jack Shay nears the end of his 15-year tenure as head of the alcohol and drug awareness program.

Shay will retire next month after more than 20 years with the Mansfield Police Department.

Also on Friday, faculty and staff at Malabar wore purple in honor of librarian Maxine Johnson who passed away recently. During the board of education meeting at Malabar on Feb. 21 the library will be named in honor of Mrs. Johnson, a 33-year employee of Mansfield City Schools. More…

A Full Slate For the Board Of Education

A literacy initiative at Mansfield Middle School and new windows at Malabar Intermediate School were key topics at Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education.

Replacement of windows at Malabar Intermediate School will be on the agenda when the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education meets in regular session at 5:30 PM on Tuesday.

Law Enforcement, First Reponders, Veterans To Be Honored At Game

Law enforcement officers, first responders, and veterans will be recognized during halftime of the Mansfield Senior-Toledo Central Catholic varsity basketball game Saturday evening in Pete Henry Gym.

Mansfield Schools Released From Fiscal Emergency

Auditor of State Dave Yost today released the Mansfield City School District from fiscal emergency, a status it held for three years.

The district was placed in fiscal emergency on Dec. 17, 2013 as a result of its failure to adopt and submit a recovery plan that would eliminate a projected fiscal year 2014 deficit. “It takes strong leadership to erase a substantial deficit,” Auditor Yost said. More…

The most prolific rusher in the history of Mansfield Senior High School football was praised for more than his gridiron records during Wednesday’s board of education meeting.

Mansfield Schools May Get Christmas Present: Release From Fiscal Emegency

Mansfield City Schools’ long and demanding journey through state-imposed fiscal emergency might – might – come to an end before Christmas.

The district’s Financial Planning and Supervision Commission, which included new member Teana Sykes, heard Tuesday that the Auditor of State’s office has initiated the process for terminating the fiscal emergency designation. Newman Elementary Demolition Progressing

Except for a chain-link security fence the front of the former Newman Elementary School on Central Avenue gave no indication Friday that demolition is underway. It’s a very different story in the back.

Great Lakes Demolition of Vickory, Ohio, has gutted several of the rooms on the west side. That work began after Total Environmental Services of Toledo completed abatement of hazardous materials. The building is expected to be demolished, debris removed and the site graded by mid-December. It will be restored to grass as weather permits. More…
