With the ongoing concerns of COVID-19, Richland Newhope was not able to celebrate March Awareness in the traditional manner last month.
One of this year’s awareness activities included a book distribution to celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with the local schools. Newhope distributed a book about inclusion to all public and private 1st -grade students in Richland County. With the help from Scholastic, Richland County Youth and Family Council, and United Way’s Big Red Bookshelf, Newhope was able to order and distribute 1,400 copies of the book Strictly No Elephants written by Lisa Mantchev. On Thursday, the Richland County Commissioners signed a proclamation declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
Several representatives from Richland Newhope/Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities and RNI, Inc. were in attendance for the proclamation, which took place before the Commissioner’s regular Thursday meeting. Richland Newhope values and truly appreciates the on-going support received from the Richland County Commissioners.

Twenty-two people representing businesses, schools, and agencies in Richland County on Thursday participated in the 18th Annual Community Awareness Day sponsored by Richland Newhope/Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The event is one of several activities marking Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
The purpose of Community Awareness Day is to increase knowledge and understanding of how people with developmental disabilities are supported in Richland County. More importantly, it serves as an opportunity to highlight a person’s abilities and to show that people with disabilities can be valuable members of the community when given the opportunity. More…
Seventeen Richland County students have been selected as winners of the 26th Annual Richland County Third Grade Coloring Contest. The event is sponsored by Richland Newhope/Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities as part of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March.
Richland County schools with third grade classes were invited to participate in the contest. Students were asked to color a picture featuring two children, one of whom uses a walker. The message on the picture simply said ‘Together We Have No Limits.’ Newhope received 504 entries from 17 schools. More…
