Fifteen community boating safety education programs received a total of $329,378 this year through the Boating Safety Education Grant Program, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
“The safety training provided by local grant recipients strengthens our efforts to make sure Ohioans enjoy a fun and safe boating experience,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz.
ODNR increased funding this year which enabled four more organizations to receive funding. This year’s recipients include several local school districts which will be providing boating safety classes to their students in environmental science and recreation programs for the first time.More…

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is building a new Boater Education Center at Lake White State Park.
“I’ve loved seeing more Ohioans on our lakes and rivers over the past few years, rediscovering an appreciation of the water,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “While boating can offer quality family time, new boaters mean more people need to learn the ins and outs of operating these vessels. From 9 AM until 3:00 PM, two indoor, heated showrooms will be stuffed with new 2022 boats from Starcaft, SunChaser, and Qwest. Also on hand will be 55 pontoon, deck, and other boats on hand or via reservation.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is offering $500,000 in grants to improve boating access for hand-powered watercraft at public facilities across the state. Applicants may request up to $75,000 for a single project during the grant period.
“Ohio has experienced extraordinary growth in paddle sports in recent years,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “This grant will provide funding for new opportunities, such as improving access sites and connecting paddlers to local amenities, which will enhance local economies and tourism for years to come.” More…
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will offer $3 million in grant funding to improve motorized boat access at public facilities across the state.
“Ohio has experienced record-breaking boat registrations and boating facility usage the past year,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “The Cooperative Boating Facility grant will provide much-needed funding for our community partners to make important investments for local boating facilities.”
Managed by ODNR’s Division of Parks and Watercraft, the Cooperative Boating Facility grant is a competitive grant program offering 100% reimbursement to eligible political subdivisions, such as municipalities, townships, counties, joint recreational districts, park districts, and conservancy districts, and state and federal agencies.
Eligible projects include launch ramps, lighting, and restrooms as well as designated ramp parking areas and docks including courtesy, boarding, and transient. The grant period runs from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2023. More…

During the week of March 19-25, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) are encouraging boaters to ‘Spring Aboard’ by enrolling in a boating education course. This national boating safety campaign was created to help educate boaters and reduce the number of serious boating accidents.
“The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft wants to ensure every effort is made to promote boater safety and encourage education on the water,” said Mike Bailey, chief of the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft. “The Spring Aboard campaign is a great tool we use to help limit the number of serious accidents that occur on Ohio’s waterways.” More…
