In a record-breaking show of support, The Shelby Foundation’s Women’s Fund has awarded its largest grant cycle yet — $13,450 — to four local organizations working to uplift and empower women and children across Richland County.
Thanks to the growing momentum behind the 100+ Women for Shelby initiative and a successful Giving Tuesday campaign that brought in $10,000 in matching funds, the Fund was able to significantly expand its giving power in 2025.
“This fund is about unlocking the full potential of women,” said Carrie Kemerer, executive director of The Shelby Foundation. “Many donors feel deeply connected to ensuring the next generation has the resources to thrive.”
Where the Grants Are Going
This year’s recipients represent a powerful cross-section of support for vulnerable populations:
- Acts 4 Love – Comfort Capes for Children ($2,350): Volunteers create soft, superhero-style capes for children facing medical treatment at Akron Children’s Hospital, giving young patients strength and comfort.
- The Domestic Violence Shelter – Safe Start ($4,000): Helping women rebuild after abuse, this program provides stability and essential support during a critical time of transition.
- Shelby Help Line Ministries – Summer Lunches ($6,000): Filling a gap during the summer months, this initiative ensures that children — and the women who care for them — don’t go hungry when school is out.
- Girl Scout Summer Day Camp – Shelby Unit 814 ($1,100): Empowering girls through leadership, connection, and adventure, this day camp helps build confidence and community among young women.
Small Gifts, Big Impact
Founded in 2018, the Women’s Fund has now awarded nearly $30,000 in grants focused on education, leadership, healthcare, and economic stability for women and children. The Fund also supports additional initiatives like Operation Hygiene and seasonal giving programs that reach even more families throughout the year.
The math behind the mission is simple but powerful: over 180 local women contribute $100 annually to make this possible.
“It takes a village,” said Kemerer. “When we come together — hundreds of women strong — we can really make an impact.”
