With spring in full swing, the Shelby City Health Department is calling on all residents to roll up their sleeves and take part in the city’s annual Community Cleanup, happening Friday, May 16th (8:00 AM–4:00 PM) and Saturday, May 17th (8:00 AM–2:00 PM). The drop-off site will be at the Electric Department lot located at 73 West State Street.
A Citywide Effort to Clean, Clear, and Care
Dubbed “Showing Pride City Wide,” this event is more than just a chance to clear away clutter—it’s a public health initiative. “By cleaning your yard, you help control pests like rodents and mosquitoes which spread disease,” says the Health Department.
This community-wide effort is focused on improving the exterior appearance of properties while enhancing the health and safety of neighborhoods across Shelby.
What You Can Drop Off
Only items from the exterior of properties will be accepted (no curbside pickup available), including:
- Appliances: Stoves, refrigerators, window air conditioners, washers, and dryers
- Outdoor furniture (no mattresses)
- Passenger vehicle tires not on rims
- Fallen limbs/branches less than 2 inches in diameter (note: no fresh-cut limbs)
Know Before You Load: What’s Not Allowed
Not everything will be accepted. Items not permitted include:
- Pesticides, herbicides, and cleaners
- Electronics such as TVs and computers
- Hazardous waste: Paints, stains, varnishes, oils, fluids, and batteries
- Commercial, tractor, race, or semi tires
However, there’s one exception: Dried latex paint is acceptable (residents are encouraged to leave lids off to speed up the drying process).
For Shelby Residents Only
The event is open exclusively to Shelby City residents, and city officials will verify addresses. Health officials reserve the right to decline excessive or unfit items.
Need a Hand? Help is Available
Assistance is available for elderly or disabled residents who may need help with item removal. Those individuals can call 419-342-5226 for arrangements.
A Cleaner Shelby Starts with You
The annual cleanup isn’t just about trash—it’s about community. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, pride in property, and shared responsibility for public health. Whether you’re hauling an old fridge or trimming back branches, every little bit helps.
So mark your calendar, Shelby. It’s time to tidy up, take action, and show pride—city wide.
