The Ohio Department of Development has announced $22.4 million in grants awarded to 27 communities statewide to enhance access to housing and provide homeownership and rental assistance for low- and moderate-income families. Among the recipients is Richland County, where the City of Shelby will benefit from a $700,000 grant to improve housing opportunities and ensure fair housing practices.

Investing in Ohio’s Housing Stock

The grants, awarded through the Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP) program, are part of Ohio’s efforts to preserve and improve its housing stock. CHIP partners with communities across the state to fund various housing-related initiatives, including home renovation, repair, and rental assistance.

Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of housing security in his statement:

“We want all Ohioans to have a safe and stable place to call home, and these grants support that mission by improving housing, supporting homeownership, and creating opportunities for a better future.”

Funded by a combination of the Ohio Housing Trust Fund, the federal Community Development Block Grant, and the HOME Investment Partnership Programs, CHIP ensures communities have the financial resources needed to create and sustain safe and affordable housing.

Transforming Communities Through Housing

Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development, highlighted the broader impact of these investments:

“When families have access to quality housing, it transforms lives and strengthens communities. We are committed to working alongside our partners to make transformational investments just like these that ensure every Ohioan has the chance to live their best life.”

The grants reflect Ohio’s ongoing commitment to addressing housing challenges and creating opportunities for low- and moderate-income families to achieve stability and success.

What the Grant Means for Shelby

The $700,000 grant allocated to Shelby will fund significant housing initiatives in collaboration with Richland County. Specifically, the grant will be used to:

  • Rehabilitate five owner-occupied homes to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Repair 11 owner-occupied homes, addressing critical maintenance and livability issues.
  • Promote fair housing practices, ensuring equitable access to housing opportunities for all residents.

These efforts aim to preserve the housing stock, improve living conditions for residents, and strengthen the community as a whole. By focusing on owner-occupied homes, the grant targets long-term stability for families and individuals, empowering them to remain in safe and secure living environments.

A Broader Statewide Impact

The $22.4 million in grants awarded across Ohio reflects the state’s recognition of housing as a foundational element of community well-being. Communities receiving CHIP funds will implement a range of programs designed to meet local needs, from emergency rental assistance to comprehensive home renovations.

This initiative aligns with Ohio’s broader strategy to support economic development and strengthen neighborhoods. By investing in housing, the state is helping to create opportunities for stability, growth, and a better quality of life for all Ohioans.
