Shelby residents will have an opportunity to clear out clutter and refresh their properties later this month as the Shelby City Health Department hosts its annual Community Cleanup, a two-day effort aimed at improving neighborhood conditions and public health.
Set for Friday, May 22 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday, May 23 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the event encourages residents across the city to take part in what organizers describe as a shared investment in Shelby’s appearance and well-being.
A Practical Effort With a Public Health Purpose
This is more than a seasonal cleanup. According to the announcement, the initiative is designed to reduce conditions that can contribute to pests such as rodents and mosquitoes, both of which can spread disease. By focusing on yard cleanup and the removal of outdoor debris, the effort ties directly into broader health and safety goals. It is a reminder that small, individual actions can collectively shape the quality of life across an entire community.
What Residents Can Bring
The drop-off site will be located at 73 West State Street, in the Electric Department lot. Residents are asked to bring items from the exterior of their properties, as no curbside pickup will be available.
Accepted items include common household and outdoor materials that often accumulate over time. Appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, window air conditioners, washers, and dryers will be accepted, along with exterior furniture, provided it does not include mattresses. Passenger vehicle tires without rims can also be dropped off, as well as fallen branches less than two inches in diameter. Organizers note that freshly cut limbs will not be accepted, reinforcing the focus on cleanup rather than active yard work.
Important Limits on What Can Be Dropped Off
As with most community collection events, there are clear boundaries on what can and cannot be accepted. Items such as pesticides, herbicides, and household cleaners are prohibited, along with electronics like televisions and computers. Hazardous materials, including paints, oils, stains, fluids, and batteries, are also excluded, although dried latex paint can be accepted if the lid is removed. In addition, the event will not accept commercial or heavy-duty tires, including those from tractors, semi-trucks, or racing vehicles.
A Local Effort, Focused on Shelby
The cleanup is open exclusively to Shelby residents, reinforcing its role as a city-focused service. The Health Department also notes that it reserves the right to refuse any materials deemed unsuitable.
For those with electronic waste, a separate recycling event is scheduled for Saturday, May 23 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering an additional option for responsible disposal.
